who we are
We are working towards a world in which people of all identities and families of all kinds and configurations have access to respectful, caring, and competent support in all their health care experiences, with a specific focus on abortion.
When it was founded in 2011, the Bay Area Doula Project (BADP) was the first doula project offering ‘full-spectrum’ doula care in Northern California. The project has changed over time based on the skills and capacity of the collective members, but we remain committed to supporting pregnant people who are choosing abortion, or experiencing pregnancy outcomes other than live birth.
Some of us are birth doulas and/or postpartum doulas, and some of us focus on supporting trans folks, fat folks, and others at all medical appointments. We range from atheist to deeply spiritual. Some of us practice traditional medicines, some of us are more focused on modern/clinical medicine. All of us do abortion support and all of us trust individuals to make their own decisions regarding their pregnancies.
We partner with ACCESS Reproductive Justice to train their practical support volunteers to provide waiting room support during in-clinic abortion procedures, and to offer remote support or support in a safe place for people having medication abortions.
BADP collective members also work on projects that cultivate education and discussion in the community, including holding community abortion support trainings and hosting an occasional speaker series.
